A question I might ask of someone starting their first session of therapy / counselling is along the line of – “I wonder what brings you here?” Sometimes it evokes a clear, lucid reply, sometimes tears, other times, a degree of uncertainty. The benefit of talking with a therapist/counsellor is that over the course of sessions, you are able to look at and reflect on your experience to date, the story known only to you, in a way that perhaps hasn’t previously been available beforehand.
