About

The most important thing I have learnt is: Change is Always Possible. Issues that we modern humans deal with are increasingly complex and challenging, but we can learn to navigate them. Internal conflict, inner disharmony, dynamics in relationships, stress in work environments, overwhelming life events, regrets about the past and not feeling connected to others are obstacles to people experiencing the meaning, joy and satisfaction they desire or anticipated. Psychological ideas and advice spread through magazine articles, talk shows and self-help books are interesting but not always helpful. Face to face time with an experienced registered psychologist offers a unique relationship oriented towards self knowledge and growth. Therapy helps people be more effective and have a stronger sense of self. Emotionally self-aware people can expect healthier and more rewarding relationships with themselves and with others. They develop the necessary skills to best manage stress, anger and anxiety and other emotions which detract from a sense of fulfilment in life. Making sense of one’s reactions to stress and the emotional events in our lives and finding more adaptive ways of managing responses is a process over time. Finding increased relief and an increased sense of empowerment can be experienced more immediately. My approach to therapy is conversational and practical. I am fairly active in the process and sometimes quite coaching. The focus of my therapy is understanding the relationships between our thoughts, our feelings and our behaviours. Its also helpful to understand how our past experiences and relationships influence our present attitudes and actions. I borrow ideas and concepts that I find useful from all the major schools of psychology and a bit from business management to Buddhism. I draw on the insights and experiences I have gathered while helping a diverse range of people over many years. I have had over 6 000 hours of my own personal therapy and I constantly review my work with other experienced colleagues. I have a wide range of clients in my practise, from students to retirees, the majority being men in their thirties and forties. Most clients initially contact me as they are experiencing a specific crisis in their personal or business life but most decide to continue with therapy long after the crisis is resolved. They find therapy to be a continual proactive and healthy process which helps them be more effective, competent and empowered in their relationships and life. I specialise in the challenges facing modern men. Practice no: 8609187 HPCSA registration no: PS 0016063
